Sitka is home to numerous species of
whales and wildlife.
Come
and see the unforgettable whales and wildlife of
Sitka.
The
Pacific Ocean, which surrounds Sitka, hosts an abundance
of marine life. Because of our moderate climate, many
species of birds and marine mammals live here year
round. Humpback, Sperm, Grey, and Killer Whales are
commonly sighted near Sitka, along with otters, porpoises,
dolphins, seals and sea lions.
A few miles from the town lays the island of St. Lazaria. One local legend
claims that the island was created when the top of Mount Edgecumbe, a
local extinct volcano, blew off during eruption. St. Lazaria Island is
a national bird sanctuary. Thousands of birds call this island home.
Tufted Puffins, Murres, and Cormorants are just a few of the species
that inhabit the refuge and surrounding waters.
